Did you know that you can insert Excel into Word? That’s right, you can have the functionality of an Excel worksheet sitting inside your Word document. This is one of the many functions that I find people aren’t aware of.

Microsoft Office provides a few options surrounding this function. You can select how the file is displayed: either as normal text or as an icon (looks like an email attachment within the pages).

There are several benefits from being able to embed an Excel worksheet into your Word document.

  1. Firstly you remove the need to copy & paste the updated data as embedding will allow you to link to the original data source.
  2. Secondly, it allows you to use all the usual Excel functions, all within a Word document.

Embed an existing worksheet

Today I will show you one way to embed an existing Excel worksheet into a Word document.

  1. Open the Microsoft Word document you wish to include the Excel data in
  2. Place your cursor in the position you wish to add the Excel content
  1. Click the Insert tab and select the Object button which is located within the Text group of icons
  2. The Object dialog box will appear:
  1. Here you have two options, the first tab called Create New, allows you to embed a new object which will allow you to enter any information you require, the second tab, Create from File, allows you to embed an existing file. You can also link to the existing file which allows updates to filter through into your document.
  2. Select the Create from File tab
  3. Click the Browse button
  4. Navigate and locate the Excel worksheet you want to embed
  1. Click Insert
  2. You will now see the file path and file name displayed in the File name box

To link or not to link

There are two options provided when embedding an object. The options include Link to file and Display as an icon.

The Link to file checkbox allows you to insert the content of a file into your document and create a link to the original file. If the original file is updated, the changes will appear in your document.

The Display as icon allows you to have the file embedded but displayed as a simple Excel icon within the document rather than the actual file content.

  1. Choose any additional options to link the file or display as an icon then click OK
  2. The Excel data should now be displayed within the Word document
  1. The embedded Excel worksheet is editable by double-clicking on the data
  2. You can also resize the data to fit neatly within your document
  3. Your Excel data is now embedded within the Word document
  4. Save your document (Ctrl + S)

Now be sure to take a look at the other Word and Excel articles.
